Every home has the same problem: more things to charge than places to charge them. There are two ways to fix it. The Case for a Built-in USB Socket
The strongest argument for a USB socket is not the charging, it is what you stop losing. A phone charger plugged into a double socket takes half your outlets for a device drawing a couple of watts. Swap the faceplate and both 13A outlets stay free while the USB ports become extra capacity rather than a trade off.
The second argument is the mess. Bedside tables, kitchen worktops, and desks accumulate plug-in charger blocks, and each one is a thing that gets knocked out, lost, or borrowed. A USB socket has nothing to lose and nothing to unplug.

USB-A gave way to USB-C, wattages climbed from 5W to 65W and beyond, and a socket you fitted in 2015 now charges a modern phone slowly. A wall socket is a twenty year fixture fighting a five year standard.
An adapter has no such problem. When the standard moves, you spend fifteen pounds and move with it. That is a serious argument, not a consolation prize, and it is why plenty of electricians will tell you to put fitted USB where you know you need it and use adapters everywhere else.

Understanding the Power Ratings

Where the Adapter Becomes the Problem
Adapters are safe when used properly, and a lot of the advice against them is really advice against misusing them. But the failure modes are worth knowing, because they are the reason fitted sockets exist.
The key fact is this: a UK 13A socket supplies a maximum of 13A, roughly 3000W. Plugging an adapter in does not raise that ceiling. It just gives you more ways to hit it.

- Do not ignore warmth. If a plug, adapter, or lead is warm to the touch, unplug it and work out why.
Notice that a built-in USB socket sidesteps most of that list. There is nothing to daisy chain, no lead to coil, and the charging circuit is designed into the accessory rather than bolted onto it. That, more than charging speed, is the honest safety argument for fitted USB.

A Note on Fitting
Replacing a socket faceplate is not a big job, but it is still electrical work on a live circuit and it is easy to underestimate. The circuit must be isolated at the consumer unit, the existing back box must be deep enough, and metal faceplates need a correct earth connection.

Common Questions
Do USB sockets use electricity when nothing is plugged in?
Yes, but very little. The charging circuit stays energised, so there is a small standby draw. On current models it is low enough that the cost over a year is negligible, and better designs shut the circuit down to near zero when no device is detected. It is not a reason to avoid them.
Will a USB socket charge my phone as fast as its own charger?

Can I fit a USB socket myself?
