One Metal, Two Finishes: Understanding Polished and Brushed Sockets
Polished and brushed are not two different metals, they are two different surface finishes applied to the same metal. Polished is buffed to a mirror shine. Brushed is finely abraded to a soft, matt sheen. That single difference changes how the plate looks, how it handles fingerprints, and how much cleaning it asks of you.
If you are upgrading from standard white plastic to a metal finish, this is usually the first decision you have to make, and it is easy to get stuck on it. Both finishes are available across the same product ranges, at broadly similar prices, and both will last for years. The right answer comes down to the look you want and how much daily wear the plate is going to see.
Polished chrome is highly reflective, almost mirror like. It looks bright and formal, bounces light around a room, and shows fingerprints and water spots more readily.
Brushed chrome (also sold as brushed steel or satin chrome) has fine directional grain and a low sheen. It looks softer and more contemporary, and it hides marks and smudges far better.
How the Two Finishes Are Made
Understanding the manufacturing step explains everything else about how each finish behaves in your home.

Polished or Brushed: Head to Head
Here is how the two finishes compare on the things that actually matter once the plates are on the wall.
| Polished | Brushed | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Mirror bright, formal, high contrast against the wall | Soft satin sheen, understated, blends into the wall |
| Reflectivity | High, reflects the room back at you and helps brighten dark corners | Low, diffuses light rather than bouncing it |
| Fingerprints | Shows readily, especially on darker inserts | Hides them well thanks to the directional grain |
| Cleaning | Quick wipe needed more often to keep the shine | Very forgiving, occasional wipe is enough |
| Scratch visibility | A scratch stands out against the mirror surface | Fine marks disappear into the existing grain |
| Best suited to | Living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, period and traditional schemes | Kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, offices, busy family homes |
| Pairs well with | Chrome taps and handles, glass, gloss cabinetry, ornate detailing | Stainless steel appliances, matt paint, wood, industrial styling |
Polished Switches and Sockets
Polished plates are the choice when you want the electrics to read as a deliberate design feature rather than disappear. A polished chrome double socket against a dark wall catches the eye in the same way a chrome tap does against a stone worktop. If your room already has chrome or bright metal fittings, polished plates tie the scheme together.
- Brightens dark rooms. The reflective surface picks up whatever light is in the room and throws it back.
- Feels formal. A natural fit for living rooms, dining rooms, and traditional or period properties.
- Matches chrome fittings. Sits comfortably alongside chrome taps, door furniture, and light fittings.
- More than just chrome. Polished brass and polished copper give the same mirror finish in a warmer tone.
Polished chrome is the most popular option by a wide margin, but polished brass and polished copper are worth a look if your interior leans warm rather than cool. All three are available as screwless flat plates, so the fixing screws are hidden behind a clip on cover for a completely clean face.
Where to start, range by range
One thing worth knowing before you buy: each finish is stocked across several different manufacturer ranges, not just one. Polished chrome alone runs to more than 400 products across four ranges. They all give you the same polished chrome face, but the plate profile, the rocker shape, the insert colours offered, and the price all differ. Pick the range you like and stay with it for the whole room.
The bright, mirror finish classic. Cool toned and endlessly versatile. Four ranges to choose from.
BG Flatplate Screwless- BG FPC22W Flatplate Screwless Double Socket 13A, White Insert The everyday workhorse. A white insert keeps the face light and stops the aperture looking like a dark hole.
- BG FPC12 Flatplate Screwless 20A 16AX 2 Way Single Light Switch Standard single light switch, two way so it works on stairs and landings as well as single locations.
- Click Definity Complete SFCH536BK 13A Ingot 2 Gang DP Switched Socket, Black Insert Definity uses a raised "ingot" rocker and a separate clip on cover plate. The black insert gives a sharper, more graphic look than the BG equivalent.
- Hamilton 7G271XLEDITB100 Hartland G2 Screwless 1G 100W 2 Way LED Rotary Dimmer Hamilton call their polished chrome "Bright Chrome". A push on, push off rotary dimmer rather than a slider, and a heavier plate than the volume ranges.
- Knightsbridge SFR9901PCG Screwless 13A 1G Switched Socket with 2x USB (2.1A), Grey Insert A single socket with USB, useful where a double would be too wide, such as beside a basin or in an alcove.
Warm golden shine. Beautiful in period homes and against deep, dark paint colours. Two ranges.
Knightsbridge Screwless- Knightsbridge SFR9000PBW Screwless 13A 2G DP Switched Socket, White Insert The standard double socket in polished brass, with a white insert for a lighter overall look.
- Knightsbridge SF1TOGPB Screwless 10AX 1G 2 Way Toggle Switch A toggle lever instead of a rocker. The detail that makes a traditional scheme look properly considered.
- Hamilton 7G21SS2PB-W Hartland G2 Screwless 2G 13A DP Switched Socket, White Insert Hamilton account for the larger half of the polished brass range, so this is where to look if the Knightsbridge item you want is not stocked.
- Hamilton 7G21SS2USBC+CPB-W Hartland G2 Screwless 2G Socket with 2x USB Type C (2.4A) Two USB C ports rather than the older USB A. Worth choosing now that almost everything ships with a C to C cable.
The boldest of the three. A rich rose tone that works as a genuine accent.
BG Evolve — the only range in this finish- BG Evolve PCDCP22B 13A Double Switched Power Socket, Black Insert Polished copper with a black insert. High contrast and the most striking combination in the range.
- BG Evolve PCDCP22UAC45B 13A Double Socket with USB A and C, 45W 45W USB C output, enough to fast charge a laptop straight from the wall socket.
Brushed Switches and Sockets
Brushed plates take the opposite approach. Instead of standing out, they settle quietly into the wall. The fine grain scatters light, so you get a gentle satin glow rather than a reflection, and crucially that same grain is what makes fingerprints so much harder to see.
That makes brushed the sensible choice for the rooms that get touched most. Kitchen sockets are handled with wet or greasy hands several times a day. A switch by the back door gets pressed constantly. On a polished plate, every one of those touches shows until you wipe it. On a brushed plate, they simply do not register.
- Hides fingerprints. Easily the most practical advantage, and the reason brushed dominates in kitchens.
- Low maintenance. An occasional wipe keeps it looking new. No chasing smudges.
- Contemporary look. Sits naturally in modern, minimal, and Scandi influenced interiors.
- Matches appliances. Brushed steel plates line up with stainless steel ovens, hobs, and extractors.
One point on naming, because it causes real confusion when you are shopping. Brushed chrome, brushed steel, satin chrome, and brushed nickel are all essentially the same cool grey satin look, with only slight variations in tone between manufacturers. Satin brass is the brushed version of brass, sometimes listed as brushed brass. If you are matching to existing plates, order a single item first and hold it against what you already have before committing to a whole house.
Where to start, range by range
The brushed finishes are stocked even more widely than the polished ones. Brushed steel and brushed chrome together run to more than 600 products across four ranges, so if a particular accessory is missing from one range there is a good chance another one covers it.
The cool grey satin standard. The single most practical finish for busy rooms. Four ranges.
BG Flatplate Screwless- BG FBS22G Flatplate Screwless Double Socket 13A, Grey Insert The default choice for kitchens. Grey insert tones with the plate for a very quiet overall look.
- BG FBS12 Flatplate Screwless 20A 16AX 2 Way Single Light Switch The matching single light switch. Buy these in quantity when you are refinishing a whole floor.
- Knightsbridge SFR9000BCW Screwless 13A 2G DP Switched Socket, Brushed Chrome, White Insert Knightsbridge brushed chrome with a white insert. A slightly brighter satin tone than brushed steel.
- Click Definity Complete SFBS586PW 13A Ingot 2 Gang Socket with USB Type A and C, Polar White Insert Safety shutter socket with both USB types. The polar white insert reads brighter than the grey inserts common elsewhere in this finish.
- Selectric 5MPLUS-749 5M-PLUS Screwless 45A Cooker Unit with 13A Switched Socket Cooker control unit with an integrated socket, the plate most kitchen refits need and the hardest to match on finish. Selectric list this finish as Satin Chrome.
Warm brass tone without the shine. Currently one of the most in demand finishes in UK interiors. Three ranges.
BG Evolve- BG Evolve PCDSB22B 13A Double Switched Power Socket, Satin Brass, Black Insert Warm brushed brass with a black insert. The combination that has driven this finish's popularity.
- BG Evolve PCDSB22UAC22B 13A Double Socket with USB A and C, 22W, Satin Brass Built in USB charging in satin brass, so you can skip the plug in adaptor entirely.
- Hamilton 7G22SS2SB-B Hartland G2 Screwless 2G 13A DP Switched Socket, Satin Brass, Black Insert Hamilton make up the largest part of the brushed brass range. Their satin brass runs slightly warmer than the BG Evolve tone, so pick one and stay with it.
- Hamilton 7G221XLEDITB100 Hartland G2 Screwless 1G 100W 2 Way LED Rotary Dimmer Push on, push off rotary dimmer. A softer, more traditional action than the BG push button.
- Knightsbridge SFPLBB Screwless 230V LED Plinth Light, Brushed Brass Not a socket, but worth knowing about. A recessed plinth light in matching brushed brass for kick boards and stair risers, and currently the only Knightsbridge item stocked in this finish.
Which Should You Choose, Room by Room
Most homes end up using both, and there is nothing wrong with that. Matching the finish to how the room is used gives a better result than forcing one finish everywhere.

Do Not Overlook the Insert Colour
Every plate in these ranges comes with a choice of insert, the plastic surround visible inside the socket or switch aperture. It affects the finished look at least as much as the finish itself, and it is the detail people most often regret.
- Black insert. Maximum contrast and a sharp, modern edge. Especially effective with brass and copper.
- White insert. Keeps the plate looking light and open. The safe choice on pale walls.
- Grey insert. The middle ground, and the closest tonal match to brushed steel and chrome.
- Be consistent. Pick one insert colour and use it throughout. Mixed inserts in the same room look accidental.
Why Screwless Plates Are Worth It
Every product listed above is a screwless flat plate. The plate is fitted to the wall in the usual way, then a separate cover clips over the top to conceal the fixing screws. It is a small change with a disproportionate effect on the finished result.
- No visible screws. An uninterrupted metal face, which is exactly what makes a metal finish look expensive.
- Nothing to misalign. No slightly crooked screw heads to notice every time you walk past.
- Easier to clean. No screw recesses for dust and grime to collect in.
- Flat profile. Slim plates that sit close to the wall for a neater edge.
Keeping Both Finishes Looking Good
Neither finish is difficult to look after, but they want slightly different treatment.
Polished
Brushed
For both finishes, use a slightly damp cloth rather than spraying cleaner directly at the plate. Never spray anything at a socket or switch while it is live, and always switch off at the consumer unit if you need to clean around a plate more thoroughly.
Common Questions
Is brushed chrome the same as brushed steel?
Visually they are near identical, and both give the same cool satin grey. The difference is in the manufacturer's naming and plating process rather than the look. If you are matching existing plates, order one item first and compare it in daylight before buying the rest.
Can I mix polished and brushed in the same house?
Yes, and plenty of people do. The rule that keeps it looking intentional is to stay consistent within each room, or at least within each sightline. Brushed in the kitchen and polished in the living room reads fine. Both finishes on the same wall does not.
Why is the same finish sold under several different ranges?
Each manufacturer produces its own screwless range, and most of them offer the popular finishes. Brushed brass, for example, is stocked in three ranges here, and brushed steel in four. The finish is broadly the same, but plate thickness, rocker style, insert colours, and price differ between them. Mixing ranges within one room is the one thing to avoid, because the plate profiles will not line up even though the colour matches. Pick a range, check it covers every accessory that room needs, then order the lot together.
Which finish lasts longer?
Both are equally durable. The difference is how wear shows. A polished plate reveals every fine scratch against its mirror surface, whereas a brushed plate absorbs light marks into the existing grain, so it tends to look newer for longer in a high traffic spot.
Do metal plates need earthing?
Yes. Metal faceplates require an earth connection, and the back box must be earthed correctly. If your existing installation was fitted with plastic plates, do not assume the earthing is in place. This is one of the reasons a metal plate swap should be checked by a qualified electrician.
Will a new plate fit my existing back box?
Standard UK back box sizes apply, so in most cases yes. Check the depth requirement on the product page, though, as USB sockets, dimmers, and cooker units often need a deeper box than a plain socket. A shallow box is the most common reason a swap stalls halfway.
Final Thoughts
There is no wrong choice here, only a choice that suits your room better. If you want brightness, formality, and a finish that matches chrome fittings, go polished. If you want something softer, more modern, and far more forgiving of daily life, go brushed.
Whichever way you lean, buy the whole room at once. Finishes vary slightly between manufacturers and even between production batches, so ordering everything together is the simplest way to guarantee that every plate in a room matches.
