A Complete Guide to Kitchen Socket Regulations and Safe Placement
A kitchen is not a special location under UK electrical regulations, and it has not been one in England since 6 April 2013. Adding or moving a socket in a kitchen is not notifiable work. Installing a new circuit for one still is. Almost every other rule people quote about kitchen sockets is guidance rather than law, and knowing which is which is the difference between a compliant kitchen and an expensive argument with a building inspector.
This guide separates the four things that actually govern kitchen sockets: the Building Regulations, BS 7671, the accessibility rules on mounting height, and the published industry guidance that fills the gaps where the standards stay silent. Every figure below is attributed, so you can check it.
Notification. Adding, moving or replacing sockets in a kitchen is not notifiable in England. A new circuit, including a new kitchen ring or a new cooker circuit, is notifiable wherever it is.
Protection. Every socket outlet rated up to 32A in a home needs additional protection from a 30mA RCD, and cables buried less than 50mm deep need it too.
Distance from the sink. BS 7671 sets no distance. The IET and NICEIC both recommend a minimum of 300mm measured horizontally.
Height. The 450mm to 1200mm rule comes from Approved Document M and applies to new dwellings only, not to a kitchen refit in an existing home.

Is a Kitchen a Special Location?
No, and this single misconception causes more confusion than anything else on the subject. Before April 2013, electrical work in a kitchen in England was notifiable to Building Control. On 6 April 2013 the notifiable list was cut back, and kitchens and outdoor work came off it. A great deal of guidance written before that date is still circulating unchanged.
Under the current Approved Document P, only three categories of domestic electrical work are notifiable in England: installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, and any addition or alteration to an existing circuit in a special location. Special locations are rooms containing a bath or shower, a swimming pool, or a sauna heater. A kitchen is none of those.

Because a full kitchen refit usually involves at least one new circuit, most refits end up notifiable anyway. The distinction still matters, because it tells you whether you are dealing with a single socket job or a Building Control matter.
Outside England, check locally before you start. Wales did not adopt the 2013 amendment, so the older and wider notifiable list still applies there and kitchens remain in it. Scotland and Northern Ireland operate separate building regulation regimes.
What BS 7671 Actually Requires
BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, is where the technical requirements live. It contains no rule that mentions kitchens by name. What it does contain are general requirements that bite hard in a kitchen, because a kitchen combines water, heat, metal and heavy load in one room.
- 30mA RCD protection for every socket outlet rated up to 32A intended for use by ordinary persons, which in a home means all of them
- 30mA RCD protection for cables concealed in a wall at a depth of less than 50mm, unless mechanically protected or in earthed metallic conduit
- Prescribed safe zones for buried cables, within 150mm of the top of the wall or of a corner, or running vertically and horizontally in line with the accessory
- Suitability for external influences, which is the requirement that governs positioning near sinks, hobs and steam
- Double pole isolation for fixed appliances, so the appliance can be isolated without pulling the circuit
- Correct circuit design for the actual load, rather than assuming one ring will carry a modern kitchen
Notice what is missing from that list. There is no maximum number of sockets, no minimum number of sockets, no stated distance from a sink, and no stated mounting height. Those come from elsewhere, or from nowhere at all.
How Close Can a Socket Be to a Sink or Hob?
This is the most frequently asked kitchen question and the most frequently mis answered. The honest answer is that the standard does not give a number, and the widely quoted 300mm figure comes from guidance published alongside it.
IET, BS 7671 frequently asked questions"whilst BS 7671 does not give a distance the IET Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations, 5th Edition recommends a minimum of 300 mm from the edge of the sink unit to the socket outlet."
NICEIC gives the same figure, recommending that socket outlets and other accessories sit at least 300mm horizontally from a sink or draining board where they are unlikely to be splashed. Both are guidance, and both exist to help you satisfy the actual regulation, which is the requirement that equipment be suitable for the external influences it will meet.
The practical reading is straightforward. Treat 300mm as the working minimum, measured horizontally from the edge of the sink or the hob, and increase it where splashing or steam is likely. An electrician who places a socket 150mm from a tap has not broken a numbered rule, but they will struggle to argue the installation accounts for external influences, and it will be flagged on an inspection.
Socket Heights in a Kitchen
The 450mm to 1200mm figure quoted everywhere is real, but it is narrower in scope than most people assume. It comes from Approved Document M, the accessibility part of the Building Regulations, and paragraph 1.18 applies it to new dwellings only. Refitting a kitchen in an existing house does not trigger it.
In practice the numbers work out comfortably. A standard worktop sits at around 900mm from the floor, with a 100mm to 150mm upstand above it, which puts a socket at roughly 1,050mm to 1,150mm. That is inside the Part M band with room to spare, so a conventional kitchen layout complies without anyone thinking about it.

Circuits and How Many Sockets a Kitchen Needs
No regulation states a minimum number of kitchen sockets. That means the number is a design decision, and the risk of getting it wrong is not a compliance failure but a safety one, because too few sockets produces extension leads.

The same guidance notes that a cable reel left wound can be rated as low as 3A or 4A. In a kitchen, where a single kettle draws close to 13A on its own, that is a genuinely dangerous combination.
Circuit design
A standard 32A ring final circuit in 2.5mm² twin and earth serves an unlimited number of socket outlets across a floor area of up to 100 square metres, but a modern kitchen concentrates load in one room in a way the ring was never designed around. Common practice now is a dedicated kitchen circuit, or a pair of radial circuits, so the kitchen is not sharing capacity with the rest of the floor.
Fixed appliances that draw heavily, such as an electric oven, are given their own circuit. A cooker circuit is typically 32A or 45A in 6mm² cable, protected accordingly, and it is a new circuit, which makes it notifiable.
A practical planning number
Since there is no regulatory minimum, plan from the appliance list rather than from a rule of thumb. Count every appliance that will live on the worktop permanently, add the ones that come out occasionally, then add at least two spare double sockets. In a typical family kitchen that lands at six to eight double sockets above worktop level, plus separate supplies for the built in appliances.

Isolation for Built In Appliances
A dishwasher plugged in behind a fitted cabinet is unreachable in a hurry, which is why every built in appliance needs an accessible means of isolation above the worktop. There are three common ways to provide it.
20A double pole switch

Label the switches. An unlabelled row of four identical rockers above a worktop is the reason people end up turning off the freezer to reset the extractor.

Mistakes That Fail an Inspection
These are the issues that come up repeatedly when a kitchen installation is tested, and every one of them is avoidable at the design stage.
- No RCD protection. Sockets on an older board with no 30mA protection. This is the single most common finding in kitchens in pre 2008 installations.
- Cable outside a safe zone. A cable run diagonally behind a run of units at less than 50mm depth, with nothing to stop a fixing screw finding it.
- Sockets too close to the sink. Under 300mm horizontally, with no argument available that external influences were considered.
- No accessible isolation. A built in appliance whose only switch is the socket behind it, reachable by emptying the cabinet.
- Overloaded circuit design. A whole kitchen hung off the same ring as the rest of the ground floor, with an oven added to it.
- Extension leads as permanent wiring. A lead behind a fitted unit is inaccessible, unrated for the load, and impossible to inspect.
Certification, Landlords and Selling
Even where work is not notifiable, it is worth recording. A local authority can serve an enforcement notice on building work that does not comply for up to 10 years after completion since the Building Safety Act 2022 extended the previous 12 month window, and prosecution in the Magistrates' Court carries an unlimited fine.
If you let the property, the position is firmer. In England, the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020 require the installation to be inspected and tested at intervals of no more than 5 years by a qualified and competent person, with a financial penalty of up to £30,000 per breach. A kitchen refit with no RCD protection and no paperwork is exactly what an Electrical Installation Condition Report is designed to catch.
For an owner occupier there is no duty to hold a certificate, but conveyancing solicitors increasingly ask for one. If you do the work yourself where it is legal to do so, photograph the cable runs before the units go in and write down what you fitted and what you tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need permission to add a socket in my kitchen?
Not in England. Adding a socket to an existing circuit in a kitchen has not been notifiable work since 6 April 2013, so no Building Control application is required and no registered electrician has to sign it off. The work must still comply with BS 7671 and be carried out by someone competent.
Installing a new circuit for the kitchen is a different matter and is notifiable wherever it is. In Wales the older, wider notifiable list still applies, so check with your council before starting.
How far must a socket be from a kitchen sink?
BS 7671 does not give a distance. The IET Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations recommends a minimum of 300mm from the edge of the sink unit to the socket outlet, and NICEIC recommends the same 300mm measured horizontally from a sink or draining board.
Treat 300mm as the working minimum and go further where splashing or steam is likely. The underlying regulation is that equipment must be suitable for the external influences it will meet, which a socket beside a tap plainly is not.
What height should kitchen sockets be?
Approved Document M sets 450mm to 1200mm from finished floor level for switches and socket outlets, but that applies to new dwellings only, not to a refit in an existing home. In practice a socket 150mm above a standard 900mm worktop sits at around 1,050mm, comfortably inside the band.
Do kitchen sockets need RCD protection?
Yes. BS 7671 requires additional protection by a 30mA RCD for socket outlets rated up to 32A intended for use by ordinary persons, which covers every socket in a home. Cables buried in a wall at less than 50mm depth also need 30mA RCD protection unless they are mechanically protected or have an earthed metallic covering.
Where the consumer unit is older and has no RCD, an RCD protected socket provides protection at the outlet as an interim measure, though upgrading the board is the proper fix.
How many sockets should a kitchen have?
There is no legal minimum or maximum. Plan from the appliance list instead: count the appliances that live on the worktop permanently, add the ones that come out occasionally, then add at least two spare doubles. A typical family kitchen lands at six to eight double sockets above worktop level, plus separate supplies for built in appliances.
Under specifying is the real risk, because it produces extension leads, and Electrical Safety First is explicit that overloading sockets creates a risk of fire.
Can a socket go above a hob or a cooker?
It should not. There is no numbered prohibition in BS 7671, but a socket directly above a hob fails the external influences requirement, because reaching it means reaching across heat and steam, and a trailing flex can fall onto a live ring. Position sockets and the cooker control unit to one side instead, and keep the same 300mm horizontal clearance you would use near a sink.
Does a built in oven need its own circuit?
Usually yes. An electric oven is a heavy fixed load and is normally given a dedicated circuit, typically 32A or 45A in 6mm² cable with a cooker control unit for isolation. Some smaller single ovens are rated to run from a 13A plug, in which case a switched socket with an above worktop isolator is acceptable. Check the appliance rating plate before deciding.
A new cooker circuit is a new circuit, so it is notifiable to Building Control in England even though the kitchen itself is not a special location.
Are kitchen sockets covered by a landlord EICR?
Yes. In England the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020 require the whole fixed installation to be inspected and tested at least every 5 years by a qualified and competent person, with a penalty of up to £30,000 per breach. Kitchen sockets without RCD protection, or cables outside safe zones, are common reasons for an unsatisfactory report.
Final Thoughts
Kitchen socket regulations are simpler than the internet makes them look. One rule is legal and binary: a new circuit is notifiable, everything else about sockets in a kitchen is not. One rule is technical and non negotiable: 30mA RCD protection on the sockets and on shallow buried cables. The rest, including the 300mm from a sink and the 450mm to 1200mm height band, is either guidance or applies only to new build.
The part worth spending time on is the part no regulation covers. Cooking appliances account for 44% of accidental dwelling fires in England, and a kitchen with too few sockets ends up running on extension leads that nobody inspects. Specifying two more doubles than you think you need is the cheapest safety measure available at the design stage.
